Magical Michigan U.P. Fall Foliage Tour Itinerary

October 2-9, 2020

You are about to become a member of a wonderful and intimate group of adventurers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.)! The U.P. is a geographically and culturally unique playground where fall colors are bold and COVID muted. What follows is a full, yet flexible, itinerary including practical background information intended to inform and enhance your experience.

Our experience starts very soon! After reading this information, if you have any questions, concerns, or tips at any time (before, during, and after our tour) please share them with Mark! Please note the many clickable web links.

Various Ground Rules & Tips

We value your health, wellbeing, and comfort!

We hope you’ll help us keep everyone safe and happy by noting / observing the following:

  • Please observe CDC Guidelines for COVID-19 prevention. These guidelines include wearing a face mask in public settings & at all times maintain a distance of six feet or more from others not part of your household / personal bubble. Remember that keeping distance from others is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.

  • Although not required, please have a COVID-19 test performed within 72 hours of the start of our tour if possible.

  • Please inform Mark ASAP via cell phone 512-689-6777 if any of the following applies:

    • if you develop any symptoms or test positive for the COVID-19 virus in the two weeks leading up to the tour, any time during the tour, or within the two weeks following the tour (e.g. until 10/23/20)

    • if you plan to travel to a foreign country in the two weeks leading up to the tour

  • Try to avoid crowds by visiting attractions (including restaurants) at non-peak hours (e.g. at sunrise or sunset, just after opening, just before closing, and before or after anticipated peak mealtimes).

  • Although it is recommended for you to download offline google maps of the U.P. on your mobile devices before you embark, it is not recommended for you to follow google map directions on the unpaved back roads in the U.P. This may lead you down a logging road suitable only for true off-road vehicles, in an area with little-to-no cell phone service…trouble!

  • Although not required, please consider accepting Mark’s invitation to join our tour’s WhatsApp group chat that will be extended to you on October 1st. It will be a useful and entertaining way for us to connect, share experiences through shared photos and short videos, coordinate our actions, and stay in touch post-tour!

If you are concerned about, unsure about, or unable, to observe any of the above, please discuss with Mark ASAP via cell phone 512-689-6777.

Pre / Post Tour

By now, Mark has delivered a small pre-tour gift package to you!! A tasty pasty to share from Muldoon’s based in Munising, and two Tiny World Treasures cloth face masks from traditional Bhutanese textile patterns sewn by a tailor based in Thimpu, Bhutan. Tiny World Tours helps creates business opportunities and donates funds to support various Bhutanese social and cultural causes including the Bhutan Foundation.

If you don’t already have a Michigan State Park Recreation Passport for your car, Mark will procure one for you, or you can purchase one yourself at the entrance to any Michigan State Park and have Mark reimburse you (Note: The reimburse option will be easiest). These recreation passport purchase funds support park improvements around the state of Michigan!

If your schedule allows, please consider starting your trip a day or two earlier and/or extending your tour a day or two later to take even more advantage of being in the U.P.! Mark will be delighted to advise you and help with reservations. There are many other wonderful places outside of our itinerary in the U.P. that you might like to visit on your own at leisure. Some favorites across the U.P. include Tahquamenon Falls, The Whitefish Point Light & the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Kitch-Iti-Kipi, the Museum of Ojibwa Culture, and the Soo Locks, just to name a few.

For Friday night dinner 10/02/20 in Manistique, Mark’s plan is to provide take out dinner for our group to enjoy together al fresco at the picnic tables near the Manistique waterfront (weather permitting). Please place your TAP21 restaurant food take-out order with Mark by Thursday night 10/01/20. Please click below to view TAP21’s two page menu below:

Please look over these two menu pages and send Mark your order via email to mark@tinyworldtours.com or via text message or WhatsApp to cell 512-689-6777.

We recommend that you download U.P. google maps for offline use, view the AllTrails website, and download the AllTrails smartphone app before you depart home.

Points of Interest / Tour Locations / Recommended Stops

Friday 10/02/20

Welcome to the U.P. (Fayette & Manistique)!

  • 2:00 - 3:30 PM: Mark will try to contact you in the morning this day asking you to inform him of your estimated time of arrival at the Fayette Historic State Park. Please consider trying to arrive by noon or 1 PM if possible to relax / unwind from your car trip and have additional time to enjoy this special place in a relaxed way (in good weather it’s very inviting). If you don’t already have a Michigan Annual Recreation Passport for your car, please purchase one here as you enter and Mark will reimburse you. Michigan State Park Recreational Passports provide easy access and support our state parks. At Fayette there is a high quality visitor center with public bathrooms. Fayette can be a delightful place to enjoy a picnic lunch (Mark recommends sandwiches from the Upper Crust Deli in Manistique). The Fayette visitor center also has a scale model of the town as it looked in the 1860s, a gift shop that sells souvenirs… and delicious Jilbert’s ice cream (from Marquette)! Walk the ~1 mile overlook trail for a great view of Fayette from a slightly elevated vantage point. Starting at 2 PM, Mark has arranged a ~1 hour appointment with the local historian on the steps in front of the former Fayette hotel (and it’s luxurious-for-the-times upstairs outhouse for hotel guests). Please wear your face mask. Depending on the weather you might like to have a hat, sun screen, umbrella, water, camera, and notebook with you while walking the grounds.

Fayette Historic Site phone: (906) 644-2603

  • 3:30 - 6:45 PM: ~40 minutes drive from Fayette to the Colonial Motel in Manistique, check in (under your own name) and relax / explore - see a list of some recommended Manistique-area sites on the Saturday 10/03/20 itinerary (next section). The Colonial Motel is a terrific time capsule from the early 1950s, has earned a 2019 excellence award from TripAdvisor, and is the highest-rated overnight accommodations in Manistique.

  • 6:45 PM: Meet in front of Colonial Motel office to caravan to a nearby picnic dinner spot. Please place your TAP21 take-out dinner order by Thursday night 10/01/20 (see instructions in Pre-tour section above). Mark will pick up and deliver your dinner selection to to our dining destination. If the weather is uncooperative, we may decide to stay at the hotel. To accompany this meal, Mark will provide an assortment of beers, wines, soft drinks, plates, cups, napkins, and utensils. Should you need other provisions, a well-appointed upscale grocery store is very nearby.

  • 7:22 PM: Sunset

Saturday 10/03/20

Manistique & Houghton

7:00 - 9:30 AM: Enjoy complimentary light breakfast (coffee and donuts) and optional conversation with interesting proprietor, Mike Phelan, in the Motel Lobby where Mark will either be present or very nearby. The coffee and donuts can also be enjoyed at hotel picnic table outdoors. If you would like a more substantial breakfast (Mark will reimburse), the Manistique Big Boy is within walking distance and can provide indoor dining, carry out, or delivery.

After breakfast you’ll have many attractive experiences to choose from. Please consider the following.

  • Manistique-Area Recommendations:

    • Relax at the Colonial Motel until 10:30 AM (standard) or 11:30 AM (extended-upon-request) check out time.

    • Visit Kitch-Iti-Kipi (about 20 minutes from the Colonial Motel) It opens around 8 AM (gift shop may open ~10 AM). If you arrive early, you could have this magical place all to yourself! Outdoor picnic tables are available if you wish to bring along breakfast or lunch.

    • Enjoy Lunch at Upper Crust Deli offering both indoor and outdoor dining options with views of Lake Michigan. Mark recommends calling ~30 minutes ahead and placing your order to minimize contact. The Upper Crust Deli phone number is 906-341-2253.

    • Explore downtown Manistique:

Drive from Manistique to Houghton (~3hours 20 minutes ignoring stops)

  • Manistique to Houghton Route Stop Recommendations:

    • Stop at Canyon Falls and enjoy the wooded walk along the Canyon Gorge Trail (Mark would budget about 30-50 minutes depending on how long you wish to linger at the falls. Well worth it!)

    • Stop at the Ford Center in the ~1936 planned sawmill community Alberta, MI (“The Knothole” gift shop features Birdseye maple handicrafts and furniture - 10-20 minutes). There are walking trails that connect to Canyon Falls with outdoor art occasionally exhibited on the trail.

    • Stop at the scenic and historic Bishop Baraga “snowshoe priest” shrine between L’Anse and Baraga. This place is oddly fascinating, celebrates an iconic and beloved historic figure, and has nice views. (15-30 minutes)

    • The Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum is an exquisitely preserved Finnish farm homestead from the 1920s in a beautiful natural setting outside Baraga. Today (Saturday) guides will be present from noon to 4 PM, and outside of those times visits are self-guided.

    • Fill up your gas tank at ridiculously cheap prices at The Rez Stop gas station in L’Anse (on the Ojibwa Indian reservation) (click here to view an interesting recent article)

    • Visit Da Yooper Tourist Trap in Ishpenning (with very home-spun humor and many exhibits are outside) - you may like to spend 30 minutes to an hour here.

3 PM (or later): Check in (under your name) at The Vault Hotel (Houghton) Complimentary parking (in marked hotel area) is available at the parking ramp on Shelden Ave directly across from the hotel.

Evening:

Houghton Dinner Recommendations (Note: Dinner tonight will be on your own. Consider dining early, between 5 and 6 PM, to avoid crowds):

  • The Den (indoors only - Mark considers this the best restaurant in Houghton and was especially impressed with the duck)

  • The Library (indoors only - conveniently located across the street from our hotel, good food and service)

  • Keweenaw Brewing Company aka KBC (short walk from our hotel. Bring in take-out food, e.g pizza from right next door, and enjoy with KBC craft beer outside on the back deck )

  • Milly’s Hancock - Take-out only. Place your order by phone ~30 minutes in advance. Excellent sandwiches, pizza, salads, and sides. Short drive across the canal in Hancock. Enjoy in your hotel room or on the outdoor back deck at KBC (see preceding item).

  • The Ambassador - (indoors only) This is now an informal pub featuring pizza, pasta, salads and sandwiches. Despite it’s drab exterior, the historic interior is well worth visiting. Pay special attention to the delightful pre-prohibition-era murals of Germanic gnomes in various states of celebration. Seating is limited, so go early if possible especially if you wish to view the interior with less people.

NOTE: Mark will be happy to place any order for you at Milly’s (by 5 PM) and, pick up your order for you, and meet you with the food outdoors on the deck behind the Keweenaw Brewing Company at 6:00 PM! We may be joined by a young local Hancock resident who loves Houghton.

  • Enjoy a 7:29 PM sunset at Breakers Beach (~20 minutes drive from our hotel)

Monday 10/05/20

Houghton, Calumet, Copper Harbor, & Eagle Harbor

8:30 - 9:30 AM: Breakfast provided at Vault Hotel or consider a (heavy) Finnish breakfast or lunch at the Suomi restaurant near hotel. Mark will be in the hotel breakfast room.

The drive from Houghton to Calumet takes about ~20 minutes.

Calumet Area Activity Suggestions:

12:00 Noon: Recommended lunch at Michigan House Cafe (if open and uncrowded) or alternatively at Keweenaw Coffee Works in downtown Calumet (a place with reliable wifi network, sandwiches, and excellent coffee). Inside the Michigan House Cafe, pay special attention to the delightful pre-prohibition-era mural of Germanic alpine dancers (over the bar).

Copper Harbor & Environs

8:30 - 9:30 AM: Sit-down indoor breakfast nearby at The Pines Restaurant in Copper Harbor (included). Mark will be there.

Copper Harbor Area Activity Suggestions:

  • Have a lazy day in / around your cabin (~0 minutes) Bring a book.

  • Walk the 1.7 mile Copper Harbor North Point Trail at Hunters Point Park.

  • Experience the Brockway Mountain Drive, especially the fall color view from the top

  • Walk part of the Horseshoe Harbor Trail, enjoy the beach and the Mary Macdonald Preserve. To get to Horseshoe Harbor drive east from Copper Harbor past where the Route 41 pavement ends, then follow Mandan Rd for about a mile (dirt road in good shape). From this point you will see a sign and a road to the left, turn here and follow High Rock Bay Rd. for another mile to a parking area near the trailhead. The forest trail itself is less than a half mile walk, with rocky uneven terrain and leads you to Lake Superior, where a breathtaking view of the rocky shoreline awaits. Those able to scramble up atop the rocks are rewarded with an elevated view of the beach and lake.

  • If you have a high-clearance all-wheel-drive vehicle, continuing past the Horseshoe Harbor Trail is a rough dirt road that eventually leads to the Keweenaw Rocket Range at the very tip of the peninsula. It’s a story-worthy (perhaps brag-worthy) experience.

  • Visit Fort Wilkins & Copper Harbor Lighthouses State Park

  • Walk the Estivant Pines Loop Trail featuring amazing ~300 year-old White Pines! (~1.5 miles)

  • Enjoy Lunch at the Mariner North (on your own)

  • Delaware Copper Mine Tour (~35 minutes, self guided between 10 AM and 4 PM - fascinating and spooky)

  • Explore nearby Eagle Harbor and/or Eagle River

7 PM: Arrive for dinner at Harbor Haus restaurant in Copper Harbor (German Cuisine, Included, Private Dining Room upstairs with distanced tables)

Tuesday 10/06/20

Wednesday 10/07/20

Copper Harbor to Big BayLighthouse

8:00 - 11:00 AM: Take out breakfast available from Keweenaw Mountain Lodge (inside the main building - Mark will reimburse - open today but closed on previous day, Tuesday), or sit-down for indoor breakfast nearby at The Pines Restaurant in Copper Harbor (included).

11:00 AM (or earlier if you wish): Check out of Keweenaw Mountain Lodge (no need to visit the office, please just leave your keys on the table and don’t forget any of your belongings).

Drive from Copper Harbor to Big Bay Lighthouse ~3.5 hours direct drive time, not counting any stops (Note:Lunch and Dinner today is on your own).

  • Activities near the Big Bay Lighthouse:

    • Please consider any en route rest stops that you may have missed on Saturday (see Saturday itinerary).

    • Squaw Beach (a sugar sand beach on Lake Superior ~10 minutes from the Lighthouse is usually uncrowded and often completely empty)

    • Thomas Rock Scenic Overlook (~14 minutes) - Note: do not trust google maps routes on dirt roads in this area

    • Yellow Dog River Falls (~25 minutes) - Note: do not trust google maps routes on dirt roads in this area

6-7 PM: check in, settle in, and relax at Big Bay Lighthouse B&B, phone: ‭(906) 345-9957‬. Proprietor's name: Nick Korstad. Please observe the Kcymaerxthaere marker for Tumbles of Tlapak near the entrance to the lighthouse. Later, Mark will be delighted to tell you more about this! Enjoy a walk along the cliffs while it there is still light. Try to arrange with Nick to have a personal guided tour of the Lighthouse during the too-short time that you’re here.

7 PM: dinner - If you place your order with him by 5 PM, Mark will be delighted to order pick up and delivery from nearby Duke’s Grill @ Thunder Bay Inn and dine with you al fresco (outside) on the lighthouse’s picnic tables with a great view of Lake Superior at the Big Bay Lighthouse (or inside in the lighthouse’s dining room or living room).

FYI - Duke’s Grill proprietor, Wayne, tells Mark that they practice “social distancing” precautions such as tables spaced apart at reduced capacity. The restaurant usually closes at 10 PM and Wayne says there usually is little or no wait to be seated. I recommend that you try to avoid peak times when service is slow.

Option: Pop in to the Lumberjack Tavern in the late afternoon or evening for a look (and possibly a drink) (~8 minutes from our lighthouse). Light fare such as pizza may also be available here. This place is famous for an actual murder fictionalized and depicted in the novel and cinema classic “Anatomy of a Murder”. They have a spacious outdoor back yard where you will likely see offspring from some local bunny rabbits released into the wild. “Thunder Bay” is the fictionalized town name used in the movie. Although the Lumberjack Tavern was the site of the actual murder, The Thunder Bay Inn & Dukes Grill are portrayed as the murder scene in the movie. Watch the movie if you can!

Thursday 10/08/20

Big BayLighthouse to Marquette

8:30 - 9:30 AM: Lighthouse Breakfast indoors, served at the dining room table. This meal can be enjoyed from more of a distance while sitting in the nearby living room, or immediately outside at one of the picnic tables with a great view of Lake Superior.

11:00 AM (or earlier if you wish): Lighthouse Check-out

After breakfast suggestions:

  • Any of the items listed for Wednesday that you haven’t already experienced.

Drive to Hampton Inn Marquette/Waterfront (~40 minutes) - downtown Marquette

3 PM (or later): Check in at Hampton Inn Marquette/Waterfront

  • Daytime Activity Suggestions (distances are noted as driving times from the Hampton Inn Waterfront Marquette):

    • Provision yourself up at the Marquette Food Co-op (~4 minutes). This is Mark’s “go to” food store in Marquette. It’s a great place to buy food and beverages e.g. for picnic meals. It’s very reminiscent of a Whole Foods. They also practice good “social distancing” protocols here.

    • Walk around historic downtown Marquette (~4 minutes)

    • Marquette, being a university town has many distinctive coffee shops. Here’s a short list of five to get you started.

    • Little Presque Isle (~20 minutes) … adventurous people access this special place by wading through Lake Superior up to their shoulders! Try it yourself at your own risk, or just watch! Very pretty area all around.

    • Presque Isle Park (~12 minutes) A large and interesting park! - Watch people enjoying traditional cliff jumping/diving at blackrocks

    • Lakenenland (~17 minutes) A funny, funky, drive-through outdoor scrap iron folk art experience - some tableaus with decidedly liberal political messages…surprise! Free of charge.

    • Pictured Rocks Cruises - in Munising (~46 minutes). This may be a rare chance for you to view Pictured Rocks amidst fall foliage from the water. NOTE: Mark has heard a few mixed reports about COVID non-compliance. Advance purchase recommended.

    • Pictured Rocks Hiking trails - starting from near Munising (~46 minutes) and beyond (check your distances before embarking). The AllTrails app (and website) lists 16 great hiking trails, views trails, forest trails with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers, and nature lovers. There are 9 easy trails in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore ranging from 1.2 to 9 miles and from 603 to 908 feet above sea level.

    • Munising Restaurant Recommendations: (~46 minutes): Tracey’s is an unexpectedly fantastic fine-dining restaurant (advance reservations required). Muldoons Pasties is a perfect lunch stop, or pick up some frozen pasties to bring back home!

  • Marquette Breakfast / Lunch Restaurant suggestions:

    • Donkers is a classic and atmospheric breakfast/lunch counter restaurant (with homemade choclolate) - and outdoor seating available.

    • Stucko’s Pub and Grill - on third street amidst an array of similar restaurants, pubs, and pizza parlors (you may wish just to go to third street and look at the many similar options there).

    • Casa Calabria - Italian restaurant on Third Street

    • Taste a Pasty at a Marquette Pasty Shop (some listed here)…consider sharing one with a friend or else be prepared to go into a food-induced coma!

6 PM: Farewell Dinner at Presque Isle Park (al fresco, weather permitting). Mark will confirm location (and will move us to a COVID-aware indoor space in case of uncooperative weather). Mark will discuss food options with you the day before.

Marquette Farewell

Consider greeting today’s 7:58 AM sunrise with a spectacular view of fall foliage and Lake Superior from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain near Marquette (~15 minutes from the Hampton Inn Waterfront Marquette). It’s very well with the effort and involves a short (~30 minute) 1.2 mile hike featuring wooden stairs and railings - a flashlight and warm clothing are also recommended for this this walk.

8:30 - 9:30 AM: Brown bag “Grab and Go” hotel breakfast (due to COVID) -or visit Donkers in downtown for a unique, potentially nostalgia-evoking experience.

11:00 AM (or earlier if you wish): Check out of Hampton Inn

End of tour

Friday 10/09/20

  • The Pasty (pronounced “Past-ee”): a traditional hearty U.P. meal especially popular with miners - is a meat pie that originated from Cornwall, England.  In the U.P., it is traditionally enjoyed together with ketchup. It is not a type of skimpy costume. Yes, there’s even a “Pasty Trail” in the U.P.

  • Although peak Black Fly & Tick Season in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is mid-May through mid-June, you may like to have bug spray on hand to guard against other potentially bothersome insects.

  • We highly recommend the Alltrails app & website (free app version is availalble)

  • For general info regarding the Keweenaw Peninsula and what is open or closed during the time we’re visiting, visit www.keweenaw.info

  • As of 9/20/20, wearing face masks is still required in public indoor spaces throughout Michigan (click here to read FAQ)
